Kalev National Stadium Ceremonial Tower
completed 2023
Special Prize at Concrete Building of the year 2023
The Kalev Stadium Lighthouse is highly versatile in its function, serving primarily as a gateway to the stadium bowl and as a ventilation exchange tower for the underground sports facilities planned for the future Kalev Stadium. It facilitates the movement of both event management teams as well as marathon columns and processions.
Kalev Stadium is inherently a landscape; few structures are intended or able to stand out from the bowl-like terrain during events. The lighthouse carries the flame of the Song Festival and, with its monumental form, provides a focal point for the event landscape. The role of the Kalev Central Stadium in celebrating Estonian identity cannot be underestimated. The Dance Festivals held here are an integral part of our cultural heritage. In this way, the Lighthouse becomes a part of this grand event, its walls appearing as though carved from native, compacted black soil, reminding us of our deep-rooted connection to this land.
Given the conditions and context, concrete construction is nearly the only viable choice, as concrete withstands our climate well and allows for the creation of complexly shaped structures. The textured, black-pigmented concrete surface finish was achieved using a 3D-printed matrix mold. The final manual finishing, after the removal of the formwork, was carried out on-site under the guidance of the architects.
